Sigrún and Elin founded Rudda Føroyar in 2018 and now Sigrún is the chairwoman and Elin is the treasurer. Rudda Føroyar is an organisation that is dedicated to cleaning the Faroese environment. Our aim is to get 5% of the Faroese population to participate in World Cleanup Day. We also participate in other events like the Nordic Coastal Cleanup day and host clean ups throughout the year. Our organisation is built on cooperation, not blame and we frequently work with the community, schools and local businesses.
Rudda Føroyar is a member of Let’s Do It World which was founded in Tallin in 2008, their purpose is to get 5% of the globe to participate in World Cleanup Day. One day Elin saw a post about Let’s Do It World and sent it to Sigrún, she said wouldn’t it be great to put the Faroe Islands on the map of participating countries. Many people want to support and participate in Rudda Føroyar’s activities, and Sigrún and Elin have noticed that environmental awareness has increased worldwide in recent years.
Plastic pollution has many negative effects; the Faroe Islands are surrounded by the ocean and you can often find plastic in the stomach of whales, fish and birds. You can also find microplastics in the ocean and we don’t fully know the consequences of this yet. If you want to help solve these issues you can contact Rudda Føroyar to volunteer or become a coordinator. Donations help us to continue working to clean up the Faroe Islands; you can find more information on our website. On top of this, Rudda Føroyar have two big events coming up; on the 2nd of September we are hosting a conference in Norðurlandahúsið on changing habits and on the 21st of September World Cleanup Day will take place.
