World Cleanup Day 2024 - Rudda Føroyar

Rudda Føroyar

The Faroe Islands have been taking part in the World Cleanup Day since 2018. We hope that as many individuals and businesses as possible will join us in cleaning up and drawing attention to how much waste accumulates in nature each year.

The overall purpose of the World Cleanup Day is to get as many countries as possible to work towards the goal of a clean, healthy, and waste-free world. Their goal is to mobilise 5% of the world to participate and their parent project is Let’s do it!.

We also want to create increased awareness of the importance of behaviour for both individuals and companies; cleaning up the local environment spreads the desire for a cleaner world globally.

Every year in September, about 20 million people all over the world and over 1000 Faroese residents participate in this event. More than 100 tonnes have been removed from Faroese nature since 2018 and an average of 20 tons of waste per year is recorded on the World Cleanup Day.

YOU make a difference!

For every plastic bag picked up, there will be 20 grams less plastic in nature. It’s not much, but if 5% of us pick up a plastic bag, that’s going to be 50 kilos in total – and that is only in the Faroe Islands.

Your workplace makes a difference too!

In recent years, many companies have participated in the World Cleanup Day. This is a great opportunity for a company or organization to have an active day together that makes a positive impact on the environment.

Companies and organisations have also impacted the work of Rudda Føroyar by providing financial support. In recent years, Hiddenfjord has been our main supporter. See all posts here.

Nordic Coastal Cleanup

Nordic Coastal Cleanup is a collaboration between eight Nordic countries that want to encourage; a change in attitudes regarding the environment, pollution and recycling, volunteer clean-up, and overall work to reduce litter and waste in the Nordic sea. The eight organisations are: Rudda Føroyar, CSR Greenland, Keep Denmark Tidy, Keep Norway Beautiful, Keep Sweden Tidy, Arctic Marine Conservation Crew (Iceland), Keep the Archipelago Tidy and Städa Åland.

We are working hard to clean the sea and beaches with volunteers and to collect statistics on the waste. The statistics show that households and the maritime industry pollute the most, while construction also plays a big role. If we know where the waste comes from and why, then cleanup and recycling measures, and informative campaigns, can be improved.

According to a report by Nordic Coastal Cleanup, which can be read here, measures are needed to prevent litter from ending up in the sea and to ensure that this problem gets the attention of the political authorities in the countries involved.
